“What Matters Now” free e-book

One of the things I intend to do with this site is give away as much free, useful information as I can, and here’s something terrific I want to share: It’s a free e-book from author Seth Godin called What Matters Now. It’s a compilation of one-page essays from “more than seventy big thinkers, each sharing an idea for you to think about as we head into the new year.”

Godin, author of 12 books including Tribes and the upcoming Linchpin, says in his blog, “Now, more than ever, we need to shake things up. Now, more than ever, we need a different way of thinking, a useful way to focus and the energy to turn the game around. I hope a new eBook I’ve organized will get you started on that path.”

What Matters Now is a collection of wisdom and encouraging words from some of today’s most popular authors, speakers, entrepreneurs and bloggers. Among those who contributed to the eBook are Eat, Pray, Love author Elizabeth Gilbert and famous media personality Tim O’Reilly. Martha Beck has an entry about the rising tide of natural-born mystical healers (including her certified coaches, wink, wink) and how they’re trying to save the world.

Click here to download the book from Godin’s blog. Read it, be inspired, and share the link with anyone you think might enjoy or appreciate it. Here’s to a new year that sees all of us focusing on what really matters in our lives.

Thank you for this, Kristen. I downloaded the book and it’s great.

I particularly liked this section, comparing business and poker, by Tony Hsieh:

BUSINESS IS A GAME
Everything I know about business I learned from poker:
financials, strategy, education, and culture.

FINANCIALS
• The guy who wins the most hands is not the guy who makes the most money in the long run.
• The guy who never loses a hand is not the guy who makes the most money in the long run.
• Go for positive expected value, not what’s least risky.
• You will win or lose individual hands, but it’s what happens in the long term that matters.

STRATEGY
• Learn to adapt. Adjust your style of play as the dynamics of the game change.
• The players with the most stamina and focus usually win.
• Hope is not a good plan.
• Stick to your principles.

EDUCATION
• Never stop learning. Read books. Learn from others who have done it before.
• Learn by doing. Theory is nice, but nothing replaces actual experience.
• Just because you win a hand doesn’t mean you’re good and you don’t have more learning to do. You might have just gotten lucky.

CULTURE
• To become really good, you need to live it, breathe it, and sleep it.
• Be nice and make friends. It’s a small community.
• Have fun. The game is a lot more enjoyable when you’re trying to do more than just make money.
