Today I’m designing a workshop for managers/executives/team leaders who want to improve their interpersonal communications skills. I’m really excited about this but haven’t done it before so, true to my instinctive behavioral style, I’ve Googled “how to design a workshop” and have found mountains of information online and am basically teaching myself how to do it.
This type of behaviour pattern – to jump right in and then research something – is a combination of “quick start” and “factfinder” action modes, according to the Conative Abilities described by Kathy Kolbe (http://www.kolbe.com). The other types are “follow-through” and “implementer.” Each has its strengths and each has its limitations; most people have a combination of all four types in varying degrees.
Knowing your typical style can help you understand why you tend to approach things in a certain way. I love understanding myself and find that my clients do too, and this is one cool way to do it. I know, for instance, that following through is challenging for me – I get bored easily and also try to perfect something to the point where I get frustrated and move on to the next thing. This communications workshop is really important to me, though, so I’ll augment my weakness here by teaming up with another coach who has great workshop-design experience and motivates me to keep going – there’s always a way to overcome personal challenges if you want to.
